This is a moment of self-reflection in your middle age when you possibly question the choices you have made. It can result in self doubt and dramatic lifestyle changes capable of having significant impact on your emotional being and critical life decisions.
Midlife crisis is not a crisis situation. It is just semantics to give a name to a crucial phase in the journey of life when it seems like your dreams are not being met with the precision you projected.
If there are individuals who achieved all their goals within the timeframe of their projections, they must be in the minority. It doesn’t make them smarter, it only confirms the diversity in human nature.
We all have dreams and our dreams are broken down to goals with timelines. Sometimes, it is not you but the society that sets the timelines that unconsciously regulate your life without your consent. School age, marriageable age are all societal prescriptions.
I am careful not to attribute any age grade to midlife as social scientists do because I believe achievement of dreams has no expiry date. What your peer achieved in the morning, you can still achieve in the afternoon and even have a better version.
You must be vigilant not to surrender your life to the dictates of the society when you put yourself under pressure and begin to see yourself as failing when things are not happening so fast.
Midlife crisis can motivate you to rejig but it can also kill your dreams when you begin to think that it is too late to accomplish your dreams because of your age. Whenever you wake up is your morning, remember?
At whatever age, don’t wait till you accomplish all your dreams before you start adding value to humanity. It may be too late. No man is created for power, status or material acquisition but every man is created for a purpose.
Some people need power and riches to achieve their purpose on earth but what some others need to make an indelible mark on mankind is just their talent, which is right in their hands. Discovering your purpose is a major achievement.
Be intentional about living your purpose at every step of the journey. Your impact on humanity begins to count when you can be identified by what you have done, not what you can do. Legacy is not leaving something for people, it is leaving something in people.
Midlife crisis is a defining moment that must be handled with care. It is a time for self-audit. Be objective but be fair to yourself too. Don’t discount what you have achieved in a bid to nudge yourself further to achieve more.
